What is a rowing machine?

Also known as a rower or rowers, an ergometer, an ergo or just an erg (!), rowing machines are excellent pieces of home fitness equipment that are designed to simulate the movement and exercise gained from rowing a boat.....only without the water, the rain and the enforced early morning starts.  It is a sleekly designed piece of home exercise equipment that was originally used for training purposes for rowers themselves - before it became a sport in its own right  - that has now found its way into the modern gym and into the home gym.

How do I use a rowing machine?

Each home rowing machine has two pedals, one for each foot, and a strap into which the foot can be placed.  There is a seat that slides and a handle that attaches to a flywheel.  Insert the feet into the rower 's pedals and straps then tighten to ensure safety when using the rowing machine.  Sitting on the moveable seat, slide forward to allow you to take the rowers handle into your hands.  Next, pushing with both of your legs and pulling on the handle, slide yourself towards the back of the rower / ergo until your legs are straight and your elbows are bent as you pull the rowing handle into your abdomen.  When using a home rowing machine, is important to note (particularly for ladies, as there tends to be a subconscious awareness of modesty!) that the knees should be kept apart in order for the outer muscles to be worked effectively and correct posture maintained at all times.

By holding in the core muscles (at approximately 30%) as you use the rower, it will ensure protection for your spine and also have the added benefit of increasing the intensity of the workout.

Using a home rowing machine regularly provides an excellent level of cardio-vascular (CV) fitness.  Indoor rowing does provide one of the best forms of exercise you can get as it gives an excellent upper body and lower body workout.  Ergometers tone muscle, enhance your fitness and stamina whilst aiding in the reduction of fat, cellulite, love handles and excess weight, making them an excellent investment.
